There is something about the seasons. The weather changes, and suddenly, we find ourselves swapping out our wardrobes, experiencing different holidays, establishing new goals, and participating in fun seasonal activities.
Whether we do it consciously or subconsciously, we tend to make acute changes with each passing month, season, or year. And because of this, we can be more intentional about creating our ideal lives and building healthier habits.
Here are some ideas for how you can begin to create that life of your dreams and take inspiration from the rebirth and refreshing nature of the Spring.
One of the best parts about spring is the weather.
We are gradually coming out of those brisk winter months, where many of us curl up and nest before blooming into blue skies and sunshine with a light breeze.
As Miss Rhode Island describes in the famous movie Miss Congeniality, the best day is April 25th "because it's not too hot, not too cold, [and] all you need is a light jacket.”
One of the best ways to take advantage of the weather and benefit your mental health is to try a new outdoor activity. Tennis, pickleball, hiking, kickball, soccer, softball, archery, and golf are great outdoor activities that help you move your body and release endorphins.
Getting your exercise differently, instead of the same redundant gym routine, is also a great way to stay motivated and excited about your wellness.
Another place where the colorfulness of Spring can be embraced is in the kitchen.
Try removing anything processed or filled with refined sugars from your grocery list and replacing it with whatever fruits and vegetables are naturally in season. If you’re unsure, try researching what crops are growing the best during Spring in your area.
Trips to the farmers market to fill your kitchen with colorful fruits and vegetables will not only be a fun hobby but a healthy hobby as well.
A nutrient-dense diet is crucial for optimal health and provides necessary minerals and vitamins for bodily functions such as hormone balance, immune function, and energy production.
Lastly, this Spring, make prioritizing you a priority. It sounds simple, but life's constant demands can add pressure to what we think we have to accomplish. I have watched many people put themselves on the back burner, and from the outside looking in, I'm thinking, “A lot of the stuff we put so much emphasis on is not as important as our health and well-being.”
Examples include stressful jobs, obsessing over our bodies, finances, or people's thoughts, and putting pressure on ourselves to always be productive.
When these thoughts become overwhelming, drinking water, walking, or finding other healthy coping mechanisms is essential.
In my own life, this means not forcing myself to work out for a week if my body is craving rest, gardening, eating gluten and dairy (if that's what I need at that moment), reading, and journaling—even if it's sad or hard to write. I’m learning not to punish myself for feeling this Spring, and it’s been liberating so far.
Decide what new healthy habits you’d like to create this season. Think of this article as a great starting point or starter pack.
As humans, we love the new. We crave it. We look forward to new things. Starting a new month or season is the perfect opportunity to start fresh habits that inspire us. We are the writers of our story, and just these little changes could lead to fantastic life accomplishments.
